<p>MANILA — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority is monitoring flooding in the capital and teams have been cleaning up blocked street drains but, its chairman said, to help ease flooding from four days of heavy rain.</p><p>Speaking to DZMM, Atty. Romando Artes said most major creeks in Metro Manila have overflowed because of the volume of rain — around 302mm since August 5, he said, with around 226mm of rain upstream of the National Capital Region  — in recent days.</p><p>&quot;Hindi po mailabas agad yung nasa kalsada dahil puno na rin yung mga creeks. Hindi mailabas sa major waterways dahil mataas din ang tubig,&quot; he said.</p><p>(Water on the roads cannot go into the creeks because those are also overflowing. The water cannot go out to the major waterways.)</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/weather-traffic/2026/8/9/floods-swamp-parts-of-metro-manila-nearby-areas-red-level-heavy-rainfall-alert-raised-0021">Floods swamp parts of Metro Manila, nearby areas; Red Level heavy rainfall alert raised</a></div><p>He said the MMDA has already dredged many of the major creeks, making them two to three meters deeper but the volume of rain is still beyond their carrying capacity.</p><p>Artes added that some creeks are now narrower because of informal structures and other obstructions built along them.</p><p>&quot;Talagang volume and years of neglect ng ating waterways,&quot; he said.</p><p>(It is really the volume and years of neglect of our waterways)</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/8/9/mmda-dpwh-cite-progress-in-flood-mitigation-amid-persistent-rains-0324">MMDA, DPWH cite progress in flood mitigation amid persistent rains</a></div><div><br/></div><div><strong>SUCAT FLOODING</strong></div><p>Artes said most roads in Metro Manila are &quot;medyo (more or less) passable&quot; but that the MMDA is keeping an eye on Muntinlupa, Parañaque and Las Piñas, where major creeks have overflowed.</p><p>He said MMDA has deployed mobile pumps to the Sucat area  in Muntinlupa to help ease flooding but added using them will do little good right now.</p><p>&quot;Kahit i-pump natin, babalik lang din dahil nag-overflow na,&quot; he said, since water would have nowhere to go.</p><p>(Even if we use the pumps, the water will just come back because the creeks have overflowed.)</p><p>He said they will start pumping once creek water starts to recede.</p>
